Field Hockey Victorious Over Goucher in Home Opener

Field Hockey Victorious Over Goucher in Home Opener

Sweet Briar field hockey (1-1, 0-0 CSAC) reigned victorious over the Goucher Gophers (0-1, 0-0 Landmark) today in its home opener, 4-0.

The Vixens were consistent on both offense and defense, with a goal in every period as well as a total shutdown of the Gophers offense.

Sophomore Molly Booth (Orono, Maine) tallied the first Vixen goal of the 2022 season off a feed from first-year Carlina Christy (Denver, Pa.) on a corner opportunity.

Fellow sophomore Avery Jones (Union, Conn.), one of the leading scorers last season, picked up right where she left off with two-straight to bring the game to 3-0.

Jones' second quarter goal arose from a rebound opportunity from her previous shot, while her second goal of the game was once again thanks to penalty corner chance.

The match was capped by a tally from sophomore Kailey McCarthy (Atkinson, N.H.), who found the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining to bring play to its 4-0 close.

Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Maggiora (Hollister, Calif.) recorded five saves in the first 60-minute shutout of her career.

Head Coach Hannah Lott had nothing but praise for the goal scorers stating, "Avery Jones and Kailey McCarthy brought the heat with high energy and intensity on both offense and defense and Molly Booth [is] defining herself as a goal scorer this season!". On the level of play that is coming from first-year Christy, Coach Lott said that she has "made a big impact assisting in two goals!".

Highlights

  • Christy recorded her first collegiate point with her assist on Booth's goal and added another helper on Jones' 2-0 goal.
  • Along with scoring, McCarthy earned an assist on the third goal of the game.
  • Jones led the team in shots on goal and total shots, with three and seven, respectively.
