Amherst County High School had the highest enrollment among Amherst County schools, welcoming 1,243 students during the 2023-24 school year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed at the time, 51.6% of them were male, and 48.4% were female.

Data also showed that most of the students were white, representing 66.4% of Amherst County High School's total enrollment.

Among the nine schools in Amherst County, Monelison Middle School ranked second in enrollment numbers with 512 students, while Madison Heights Elementary School welcomed 429 students to be ranked third in the 2023-24 school year.

Amherst County High School is part of Amherst County Public Schools District, which roughly covers schools within Amherst County, with its main office in Amherst.

In the previous school year, Amherst County High School also had the highest number of students among Amherst County schools.

According to Public School Review, Virginia public schools saw an average student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 1:14 in the 2023-24 school year, which is better than the national average of 1:15 in public schools.
