Play about African American voting rights coming to Lynchburg March 28

Actress and singer Mzuri Moyo Aimbaye will present her award-winning one-woman play “The Fannie Lou Hamer Story,” about the mother of African American voting rights, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, in Hall Campus Center’s Memorial Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

The 90-minute play, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2021, highlights the inspirational journey of Fannie Lou Hamer, an unsung hero who became a catalyst for the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Described as an “entertaining [and] educationally focused production that addresses the struggle for human dignity and freedom,” the play is directed by award-winning director, producer, and documentarian Byron C. Saunders. It features “riveting” storytelling, a series of “emotionally stirring” songs from the civil rights movement, and a “horrific video lynching montage,” according to Aimbaye’s website.

Aimbaye is described as possessing “the presence of a movie star with a booming vocal range and versatility of an opera singer.” She’s performed on cabaret and concert stages nationally and internationally, and lived and sang briefly in Paris and Rome.

After returning from Europe, Aimbaye trained as an actress at HB Studio in New York City. She performed in small productions in the New York and New Jersey area and was later cast as Lucy in the first film depicting an African American slave revolt, “Sankofa” (1993).
