21

County of Amherst issued the following announcement on March 9

Over 320 children have signed up to play spring soccer through the Amherst County Recreation and Parks department. We are pleased to have record-breaking sign-ups this year and cannot wait for the start of the season.

Coaches are still needed for the under 15 and under 18 age groups. If you are interested in coaching, please contact Randy Nixion at (434) 946-9371. You will need to complete a background check at https://amherstcounty.quickapp.pro/

The combine/draft will take place at 1:00 on Saturday, March 12, at Coolwell Park. Coaches should attend. Athletes will run through drills and then be placed on teams. Teams will be created as equally as possible in terms of skill and ability. The time commitment includes one evening practice a week and games on Saturday Starting April 2 and ending June 4.

The Amherst County sports programs can only exist with support from the community. Jeremy Bryant, the Director of Community Development, spent many years coaching for Amherst County. “Coaching youth soccer is a great opportunity to impact the lives of children. Beyond the chance to teach soccer and athleticism, you have the opportunity to teach life-long lessons to your team. Positive coaching helps build their self-confidence, which is something children will be able to take with them off the field. The lesson they learn can be applied for the rest of their lives.” says Bryant.
