The House Education and Workforce Committee has passed Congressman Bob Good’s Protecting Student Athletes’ Economic Freedom Act with a vote of 23 to 16. The legislation specifies that student athletes cannot be considered employees of their institutions, conferences, or associations. Rep. Good's bill aims to maintain the integrity of collegiate athletics and protect educational opportunities for student-athletes.

“As a former college wrestler, I strongly believe America’s long tradition of college athletics should not be ruined by reclassifying student-athletes as employees, or moving to unionization,” said Good. “I am very pleased that my committee colleagues voted in support of my efforts to maintain a balance between athletics and academics, ensuring that college sports programs remain viable, beneficial, and enjoyable for all student athletes."

H.R. 8534 is now Rep. Good’s fifth bill of the 118th Congress that has been reported out of Committee and is eligible for consideration on the House floor.
