Congressman Bob Good (R-VA) has introduced the Veterans Education is Timeless Act of 2023, aimed at updating eligibility dates for six Veterans and Survivors Education programs. The bill seeks to enable veterans and their dependents to use these educational benefits regardless of age or timing.
"Our veterans and their families have made tremendous sacrifices for our country, and they deserve to have access to the educational benefits promised to them, no matter when they choose to use them," said Congressman Good.
The proposed legislation aims to address the current limitations imposed by delimiting dates on most veterans education benefits. These dates act as deadlines, after which veterans are unable to utilize their benefits. Similarly, dependents face either a year or age limit, preventing them from accessing promised benefits.
The Veterans Education is Timeless Act seeks to remove these "arbitrary deadlines," ensuring that veterans and their families can receive the educational assistance they are entitled to. By extending the eligibility dates for programs such as the Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA), Montgomery GI Bill—Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR), Montgomery GI Bill—Active Duty (MGIB-AD), Post-Vietnam Era Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP), Post-9/11 GI Bill, and Fry Scholarship, the bill aims to provide vital educational support to veterans and their families.
According to Congressman Good, these programs play a crucial role in easing the transition to civilian life and helping veterans and their families achieve their career and educational goals.
The bill has garnered support from several cosponsors, including Randy Weber (TX-14), Scott DesJarlais (TN-04), Ralph Norman (SC-05), Mike Garcia (CA-27), Jerry Carl (AL-01), Byron Donalds (FL-19), Tom Tiffany (WI-07), Mary Miller (IL-15), Clay Higgins (LA-03), Joe Wilson (SC-02), John Moolenaar (MI-02), August Pfluger (TX-11), and Claudia Tenney (NY-24).
The introduction of the Veterans Education is Timeless Act reflects a bipartisan effort to improve access to veteran benefit programs and ensure that veterans and their dependents can utilize their educational benefits without arbitrary limitations.
