At the regular Board meeting of the Campbell County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, October 6, VACo representative Jeremy Bennett presented the Board with the County’s 2nd VACo award, recognizing the new Campbell LEADs program. Competing with 100 other locality award nominations from across the state, Campbell County was selected as one of 29 localities to receive this award for achievement.
In September 2021, Campbell County's Strategic Leadership Team (4 department heads and the County Administrator) collaborated to launch a new 8 month internal Leadership Academy (Campbell LEADs) focused on crucial communication skills, the essence of government service, challenging ethical issues faced in local government, change management, and planning/team building skills. Staff were instructed on how to manage complex issues, leading through change, conflict management, budgeting, and project/priority management. Teams were also challenged to collaboratively embark on projects that would move the County forward.
An initial cohort of 10 leaders/ managers were selected as a pilot group. Campbell County’s first internal Leadership Academy, Campbell LEADS, met monthly (September 2021- April 2020) for 3 hour training sessions on topics that directly impact managers. At the conclusion of the program, Campbell County had provided 10 employees with an in-depth Leadership Training, new connections in the organization, and engaged staff in practical projects to help solve identified issues. This was achieved at the same price point of sending 2 employees for outside Leadership Training.
“Campbell LEADs is local leadership curriculum put in place to facilitate continued leadership development for key individuals in all departments and at all levels of our organization—recognizing that leadership is not a position on an org chart, but a behavior in an organization,” said Frank Rogers, Campbell County Administrator. “We are proud to offer this program and to be recognized as a model throughout the state for fostering excellence in leadership. The Board of Supervisors and I thank VACo for this recognition and our dedicated staff for their outstanding work on this new program.”
