Lynchburg Police Department issued the following announcement on Dec. 30
A wanted man is in custody after assaulting a Lynchburg Police Department K9 last week.
On December 20, 2021 around 10 p.m., Officer Reed and his K9 partner, Knox, were called to Anthony Place in Lynchburg to help locate Calvin Lee Wesley, Sr. who was wanted for violating a court order. When officers located Wesley, he jumped from the window of a residence and led officers on a foot chase into the woods. Officer Reed sent K9 Knox to apprehend Wesley as he was trying to get into a vehicle on Westbrook Circle. During the arrest, K9 Knox was assaulted several times by Wesley prior to being taken into custody by officers.
As a result of this incident, Calvin Lee Wesley, Sr. was arrested on the following charges:
Two counts of violating a court order
Fleeing from a law-enforcement officer
Injuring a police animal
Wesley was treated at Lynchburg General Hospital and then taken to the Lynchburg Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority where he was held without bond.
K9 Knox was not seriously injured during the encounter and is back to work with Officer Reed.
