College President Dr. Robert H. Sandel also gave out a special president’s prize to the Gaming Club, which will have $150 deposited in its club account. Radiography’s first-place prize was worth $125. Second place went to the Student American Dental Hygienists Association ($100) and two third-place prizes ($75) went to the Horticulture Club and Amateur Radio Club.
More than 20 student clubs and faculty divisions signed up to compete by illustrating 10- by 10-foot assigned sidewalk squares throughout the day in the STEM courtyard. Judges were Virginia Western Vice President for Academic Affairs Elizabeth Wilmer, Roanoke Times editorial writer and science fiction author Mike Allen, and local artists whose murals are on display in the region: Maggie Perrin-Key, Bryce Cobbs and Josh Nolan-Shafer.
All clubs participating will receive $50 for their club account from the Student Activities Office.
In a separately judged division for campus faculty and staff organizations, Student Affairs placed first. They will received a breakfast catered by the Virginia Western Community College Educational Foundation, which co-sponsored the event with the Student Activities.
The theme of the artwork was “OPPORTUNITY,” reflecting the $1.4 million in scholarships that the Educational Foundation distributes every academic year. Applications for the Foundation’s general fall scholarship cycle are due by May 1, 2022. Students can apply at virginiawestern.edu/scholarships.
