Tennis Falls to Berry; Rebounds to Sweep Messiah

Sweet Briar College issued the following announcement on March 7

Sweet Briar tennis (4-1, 1-0 ODAC) split the second day of competition in Hilton Head, S.C., falling to Berry (2-1, 1-0 SAA) 8-1 before rebounding later in the day to take down Messiah (0-4, 0-0 Commonwealth) by a score of 9-0.

The doubles pairing of Kotany/Patino defeated Barker/Masteller, 8-5, to start the day but the Vixens would go into singles play trailing 2-1.

Juniors Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and sophomore Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) all fought hard against the Vikings, eventually falling in third-set tiebreakers by scores of 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 11-9 and 3-6, 6-4, 11-9, respectively.

Sweet Briar mounted a huge rebound later in the day against Messiah, first sweeping doubles play. The doubles team of Caro/Simhambhatla took down Conjack/Tozzi in the No.1 spot with a score of 8-2. Alfaro/Guilarte won their match 8-4, while Hurt/Patino earned the greatest doubles victory of the day as they defeated Lee/Murrary, 8-1.

Keeping the momentum going into singles play with a 3-0 lead, Wandling, and first-Mattu Kamara (Freetown City, Sierra Leone) both won their matches in straight sets. Meanwhile, Guilarte and first-year Maria Caro (Bogota Colombia) took down their opponents 6-0, 6-1. Junior Nikki Simhambhatla reigned victorious over Rachel Marcroft, 6-1, 6-2. The match was closed out with senior Alexia Alfaro’s (Laredo, Texas) 6-4, 6-1 victory over Hannah Murray for the 9-0 sweep.

  • Alfaro, Caro, Guilarte, Kamara and Simhambhatla remain undefeated in singles play.
  • The doubles pairing of Kotany/Patino has also won both of their matches played so far this season.
  • All of Sweet Briar’s victories have been 9-0 sweeps.

What’s Next

The Vixens will close out their time in Hilton Head with matches against Gettysburg on Wednesday, March 9 at 3 p.m. and Swarthmore on Thursday, March 10 at 9 a.m.
