Fire Training Facility Approved for Amherst County

At their March 21, 2023 meeting, The Amherst County Board of Supervisors granted Amherst County Public Safety permission to use County land on Industrial Park Drive to develop a Fire/Rescue Training facility. The site is just past the railroad tracks before the Town of Amherst’s Police firing range. Amherst County does not currently have a site for fire training. The volunteer fire departments and Public Safety must travel to other counties and cannot train together. The prefabricated unit will allow the teams to practice fighting fires in various scenarios, including repelling and cutting vents in roofs. Additionally, the Board of Supervisors authorized Amherst County Public Safety to spend up to $325,000 from the Emergency Services Ccouncil Capital Budget to develop the facility. Amherst County owns the land, and all improvements not covered by the Board approved funds will be provided through donations. Each Volunteer Fire Department and Public Safety will have two voting members on the design and development team.
