Summer Scholars program for high schoolers features health sciences, art 

The University of Lynchburg will host two immersive college prep courses for rising ninth  through 12th graders this year. Summer Scholars Program: Health Sciences, which premiered last year, will take place June 25-30. A new addition, Summer Scholars Program: Arts, will happen July 16-19.

Lynchburg’s 2023 summer camps will also include a debate and public speaking course for local middle and high school students, camps at Claytor Nature Center, and several athletics options.

The health sciences program is a weeklong class for students interested in pre-health fields. With day and residential options, this camp will give students the opportunity to explore various health science fields, including nursing, exercise physiology and athletic training, physical therapy, public health, and sport management.

During the three-day arts program in July, high school students will try their hand at various visual art forms, including pottery, graphic design, drawing, and photography. Each session will be taught by art department faculty. The program culminates in a final exhibition of student works and a closing reception.

The cost for Summer Scholars: Health Sciences is $925 for residential campers or $495 for day campers. The cost for Summer Scholars: Arts is $350 for day students and $495 for residential students. Participants in Debate and Public Speaking, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 12-16, will hone their public speaking and analytical skills with certified instruction and coaching by the University’s award-winning Debate and Forensics Society. They’ll learn key presentation and critical thinking skills, which will help them become more outspoken students in the classroom and beyond.

This is the sixth year Debate and Public Speaking will be offered to middle and high school students. Mornings are spent in the classroom, auditorium, and computer lab, with afternoon practice outdoors.

Students ages 12-18 may participate in the weeklong camp, or attend one or several of the afternoon masterclasses individually. The cost is $285 for the weeklong camp, which includes the masterclasses, or $85 per masterclass. Lunch, materials, and a T-shirt are included in both options.

University of Lynchburg sports camps include various sports with day, weekend, and weeklong sessions running from April through August.
