Randolph Drops Two Games at Grand Slam Classic

The Randolph softball team played a pair of games on Sunday at the Grand Slam Classic hosted by William Peace. The WildCats lost 5-3 to #25 Piedmont and 4-3 to the host Pacers in eight innings.

Piedmont scored first in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Randolph answered in their portion of the inning on a Taryn Campbell (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) RBI single. The Lions moved ahead 4-1 with a three-run second inning. Campbell answered for the WildCats again as her two-run double made the score 4-3 after three innings.

A solo home run by Piedmont's Madison Henry pushed the Lions to s 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Randolph threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second and one out but back-to-back groundouts ended the WildCat comeback attempt.

Campbell went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI. Do Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) and Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) were both 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More Academy) pitched all seven innings. She allowed five runs on five hits, walking three and striking out one.

Against William Peace, the Pacers got on the board first with a solo homer by Adanya Day. In the Randolph second inning, Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) led off with a walk and moved to second base on Brooke Rolocut's (King George, Va./King George) single. Lexi Hawkins' (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) sac bunt pushed Rolocut to second and McDermott to third. McDermott eventually stole home plate to knot the game at 1-1.

William Peace took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. The WildCats tied it at 2-all on Walch's RBI single. The game went to extra innings. A double by the Pacer's Lydia Hunt plated two runs as William Peace went ahead 4-2. It was Randolph's turn to answer in the bottom of the eighth. With McDermott placed on second base, Walch laid down a sac bunt that scored McDermott to make it 4-3.  Hawkins walked and Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) singled. Lexi Lama (Benson, N.C./West Johnson) walked to load the bases with one out. Randolph's rallied stalled as Mackenzie Eggers (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) struck out and Irving grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) pitched all eight innings for the WildCats. She allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, walked two, and struck out three.
McDermott did not record a hit but did score two runs and stole a base. Walch was 1-for-1 with two RBI. Irving was 1-for-5 with a double. Charlize Taylor (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) went 1-for-2 with a double. Eggers and Nuckols were both 1-for-3 with a stolen base each.

Randolph returns home to host Mary Baldwin on Wednesday. Game 1 of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
