Lynchburg Obscura: Football and the Turkey Bowl
Did you know that the Hornets fielded a football team from 1917 to 1932? It was dropped for economic reasons during the height of the Great Depression.
“Overall, from the time they started in 1917, they basically had a pretty strong losing record,” said Julius Sigler ’62, Lynchburg’s former vice president and dean for academic affairs. “The quote, according to the press, and this is also in the board of trustees minutes at the time, was [that] the College faced three alternatives: either to abolish football, to play the men that come and have them slaughtered, or to buy players. Those were the three alternatives.”
There have been at least three efforts since then to revive the football program — most recently in 2008 — but the cost would be too high: $10 million. But, students and alumni still get the chance to catch a pigskin at the annual Turkey Bowl!
