Men’s Basketball Drops ODAC Contest to Roanoke
The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Roanoke in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats rallied from a double-digit deficit to single digits in the second half but the Maroons were able to outlast the 'Cats in the end and win 78-55.
The score was tied 10-10 at 15:41of the first half. Roanoke took a 15-10 lead but Randolph used an 11-2 run to take a 21-17 lead with 7:19 showing on the game clock. The score would be tied twice and then the Maroons broke out a 9-0 run to end the half up 32-23.
In the second half, Roanoke took a 34-23 lead after a layup by Kasey Draper. The WIldCats closed to six points at 34-28 before RC upped their advantage back up to 11 points 39-28. Trailing 49-37 with 11:47 remaining to play, a layup and three-point basket by Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) closed the WildCat deficit to seven points, 49-42, with 10;30 remaining. It was still a seven-point game, 55-48, with 8:42 left to play. Roanoke than went on a 12-3 run to increase their lead to 67-51 with 4:48 left. It was a lead that Randolph could not cut into further as the Maroons went on to win.
The WildCats shot 21-of-62 (33.9%) from the floor while the Maroons were 29-of-55 (52.7%). The rebounding battle went to Roanoke 43-30.
Phillips-McLoyd led the WildCats with 23 points on 7-of-19 shooting. Myron Williams (Fayetteville, N.C./Cape Fear) added eight points. Hunter Verling (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Randolph hosts Ferrum this coming Wednesday night. Game time will be at 7:30 p.m.
