The next event in Randolph’s Visiting Writer Series will feature a reading by poet and editor Anna Lena Phillips Bell.
Bell, the 2019-2022 Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for eastern North Carolina, will read from her work at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Alice Ashley Jack Room in Smith Memorial Building.
She is the author of Ornament, winner of the Vassar Miller Poetry Prize, and the chapbook Smaller Songs.
A former recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship in Literature, Bell is editor of the award-winning Ecotone and its sister imprint, Lookout Books. Ecotone is produced by faculty and students in the M.F.A. program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where Bell is an assistant professor of creative writing.
Previously, she was senior editor at American Scientist, covering botany, ecology, and art-science connections.
While she’s here, Bell, who holds an M.F.A. from Emerson College, will speak to students taking Randolph’s Professional Editing course, the cornerstone class for the College’s new editing minor.
