Mark down another Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week award for University of Lynchburg's men's soccer program.
Brennan Lagana scored twice and assisted another goal in the No. 24-ranked Hornets' wins over conference rivals Randolph and Roanoke last week, earning his first player of the week honor of the season and the second of his career.
Lagana began the week with a 47th-minute go-ahead goal against Randolph. After the WildCats took a 1-0 lead into halftime, Lynchburg scored twice quickly in the opening moments of the second half. The junior from Burlington, N.C. played a part in the equalizer, delivering a corner kick into the box that Zach Whelan headed home to tie the match. Lagana's goal was the second of those tallies; he chased down a Manzi Shalita through-ball and scored to give the Hornets a lead they would not relinquish in the 3-1 win.
He hit the game-winner again in Saturday night's 2-0 Homecoming win over Roanoke. In the 11th minute, Shalita again threaded a ball through the back line, and Lagana chased it down to put it in the back of the net. Lynchburg added another goal in the first half to cement the win.
Lagana, a third-team All-ODAC selection in 2021, ranks second in the conference so far this season with six assists. He's also scored five goals. The honor marks the fourth time this season a Lynchburg men's soccer player has laid claim to the league's weekly award -- Luke Mega won the past two honors, and Kenny Robles did so Sept. 6.
Lynchburg (9-0-5, 6-0-1 ODAC) sits atop the conference standings with 19 league points. The Hornets are one of 10 unbeaten teams remaining in NCAA Division III and will look to keep that dream alive Wednesday with a trip to Guilford.
