The Randolph men's soccer team looked to get back in the winning column on Saturday as it traveled to Randolph-Macon to play the Yellow Jackets. The WildCats had command from start to finish as they defeated R-MC 3-1.
The win lifts the WildCats' overall record to 5-2-2 and 2-1-1 in the ODAC. Randolph-Macon falls to 5-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.
Each team had a shot on goal in the first 22 minutes of the first half. Colby Lambert's (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) shot attempt was blocked at 31:55 but 36 seconds later, Cooper Sayles (Hamilton, Va./Loudon Valley) was able to push one through as Randolph took a 1-0 lead.
The WildCats struck again for a second time in the 60th minute as Parker Aaron's (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) corner kick found Noah Carney (Charleston, W.V./Homeschool) who put in a shot for the team's second goal of the afternoon. Randolph-Macon finally got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute to make it a 2-1 game.
Randolph was able to restore its two-goal lead in the 81st minute as Ashton Poythress (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) scored his first goal of the season to make it 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets edged out the WildCats in total shots 17-16 but Randolph led 9-7 in shots on goal. Randolph-Macon had four corner kicks to the WildCats' two.
Randolph keeper Zach Aylor (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) had a season-high six saves. Yellow Jacket goalie Adam Braithwaite also had six saves.
Randolph heads to Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
