Women's golf repeats as Bridgewater Invitational champion

After winning four tournaments last season, it was only a matter of time until the Hornets took home some more hardware on the golf course.

University of Lynchburg women's golf won the Bridgewater Invitational for the second year in a row and set a program record for a two-day team tournament score. The Hornets shot 302 on Day 1 and 307 on Day 2 for a cumlative 609 besting their previous record by three strokes. Lynchburg previously shot 612 last season during its first-place finish at the Bridgewater Invitational on Sept. 21, 2021.

Emily Brubaker (72-77--149), the conference player of the year in 2021-22, guided Lynchburg to its record-setting day once again. The cornerstone of the program opened the tournament with two birdies in the first five holes and held a two-stroke lead over her teammate Taylor Park after Round 1.

Bridgewater's Sophia Martone moved up five spots on the leaderboard in Round 2 and was in front after 16. Brubaker made a birdie on 17 and parred 18 to force a playoff. Martone won the playoff, but Brubaker still earned a top-5 finish for the 12th time in her career.

The top of the leaderboard was nearly flush with Hornets after Brubaker. Taylor Park (74-77--151) earned her first-career top-5 finish with a tie for third. The freshman scored well on the par 3s and par 5s. She owned the second-best mark with a -1 on the short holes and tied for the best performance on the long holes at -4.

Gabbie Hollberg (76-76--152), another first-year Hornet, tied for sixth with back-to back 76s. She made three birdies on Monday and followed that up with 14 pars on Tuesday.

Two-time all-conference winner Emily Erickson (80-77--157) turned in four birdies during her T11th performance, and Lily Rowe (82-83--165) helped Lynchburg stuff all five of its players into the top 20 with a 16th-place finish.

Competing as an individual, Emma Nicol (86-84--170) tied for 19th and helped Lynchburg boast itself as the only school with six players in the top 20.

The Hornets look to continue breaking records on Monday, Oct. 3 as the team tees off at the VSGA Intercollegiate in Danville, Va.
