Lacrosse Falls to Wilson in Tough CSAC Battle

9

Sweet Briar lacrosse (5-5, 2-2 CSAC) fell to the Wilson Phoenix (4-8, 3-2 CSAC) in a tough battle between two Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) teams by a score 10-8.

After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, the Vixens responded to being down by scoring five-straight goals to close out the first half of the game. Two tallies by junior Kaylah Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and goals from sophomore Sarah Southard (Culpeper, Va.), junior Zerah Chase (Virginia Beach, Va.) and first-year Trista Cleaves (Millville, N.J.) helped give the team the 5-3 lead entering halftime.

The Phoenix would start the second half hot, responding with a six-goal scoring run of their own. Broken up by only a single goal from Bailey with time winding down in the third quarter, the home team earned the 9-6 lead with only eight minutes remaining.

Bailey's fourth and Southard's second goal of the game pulled Sweet Briar within one, but the Phoenix wrapped the match up with one final goal to bring the score to 10-8.

Defensively, both sophomores Renée Taylor (York, Pa.) and Jamison Tarver (Kingwood, Texas) had the second-highest total of caused turnovers out of anyone in the game with four. Additionally, Bailey and Taylor each secured five ground balls, the most out of any player today.

Highlights

  • Bailey registered a new season-high with her four goals.
  • Cleaves was credited with two assists in the game on Chase's second-quarter goal and Southard's fourth-quarter goal.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Kat Navarro (Carlsbad, Calif.) recorded a new career-high in saves with 15.
