University of Lynchburg lost in overtime in the second game of the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Tournament Thursday night. The Hornets fell 88-78 to the hosting Wooster Fighting Scots.
Tharon Suggs gave Lynchburg its first lead of the night 30 seconds into play with a jumper. Jordan Parham extended the lead to six at the 12:19 mark. However, Wooster retook the lead over the next two minutes with a nine-point run.
Suggs did not take kindly to that. He sank two shots from downtown as the Hornets battled back with a 10-point stretch of their own, taking a 25-18 lead.
Lucas Heckaman made two buckets near the end of the opening half, creating Lynchburg's first double-digit lead, 36-26, with 2:19 to play.
Lynchburg shot 50% (15-30) from the floor during the beginning 20 minutes and took a 36-32 lead into halftime.
Out of the break, Suggs rebuilt a 10-point lead for the Hornets by scoring nine points in 2:26.
After Carrington Young came up with a steal, T.C. Thacker extended the lead to 47-35 with a fadeaway jumper off one foot in the paint. Young is averaging nearly a steal a game with 0.9 per contest.
After a pair of free throws from one of Wooster's leading scorers Kurt Turner, Isräel Lockamy gave the Hornets their biggest lead of the game. Lockamy sank a layup, drew a foul, then sank the impending free throw. He finished the evening with 10 points.
Trey Pittman also scored in double figures. The sophomore scored all 12 of his points in the second half beginning with a dunk off a steal and assist from Lockamy. He also made three shots from behind the arc. His biggest 3-pointer came with 2:56 left to play. He took a pass from Suggs after some great ball movement and sank the 3 while also drawing contact. He made the free throw afterwards to complete the 4-point play and gave Lynchburg the lead. Pittman made a season-high three 3-pointers. He is shooting 38.1% from downtown this season.
Suggs and Lockamy followed up Pittman's play with buckets and extended the lead to 75-69 with 1:31 remaining. However, Wooster's leading scorer, Elijah Meredith, scored four points during a six-point run down the stretch and the Fighting Scots forced overtime.
Suggs made the only bucket in overtime for Lynchburg, a deep 3-pointer. He finished the night with a game-high 27 points as the Hornets fell in overtime for the first time since losing to Randolph-Macon on Feb. 8, 2020.
Lynchburg swiped 13 steals in the loss marking the most steals in a game since Jan. 19, 2019 against Eastern Mennonite.
