University of Lynchburg issued the following announcement on Dec.14
Call it an exclamation point on one of the finest careers in Lynchburg field hockey's storied history.
University of Lynchburg graduate student Jackie Lerro earned second-team All-America honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, the NFHCA announced Tuesday morning.
Lerro was one of just five players who earned repeat honors on the list; the forward was also a second-teamer in 2019. The NFHCA did not announce postseason awards for the pandemic-shortened Spring 2021 season.
A master of business administration student from Royersford, Pa., Lerro led Lynchburg and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with 57 points. She scored 20 goals and doled out 17 assists in her final collegiate season, both tops on the team, and ranked seventh in all of Division III with 0.77 assists per game.
Lerro began the season as the focal point of opposing defenses, not finding the cage in the Hornets' first four games of the season. She broke out in the fifth contest of the season with a two-goal, two-assist effort in Lynchburg's win over No. 13 Ursinus on September 17, including the overtime game-winner. She went on to six multi-goal games on the season -- including hat tricks against Bridgewater (twice) and Ferrum -- and earned ODAC All-Tournament Team and first-team all-conference and all-region recognition.
Lerro wrapped up one of the most successful athletic careers in the history of University of Lynchburg. Her 249 career points and 51 career assists rank second in program history, and her 99 goals are third.
She becomes the seventh player in program history to earn All-America honors multiple times in a career.
The Hornets were successful as a team as well again in 2021, posting a 14-8 record, appearing in the ODAC tournament championship game, and earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III tournament.
