Sweet Briar College issued the following announcement on Sept. 9.
Sweet Briar’s monthly VCCA Salons are back with in-person events. On Sept. 15, 7:30-9 p.m., in the Reahard Learning Gallery in the Cochran Library, two talented and interesting women, Christine Fischer Guy and Susan J. Goldman, share their work and experiences with us.
Christine Fischer Guy is a Toronto writer and journalist, whose first novel, “The Umbrella Mender,” was met with critical acclaim. Her short fiction has been published across North America and was nominated for the Pushcart and Journey Prizes.
She contributes to the Los Angeles Review of Books and The Globe and Mail and taught creative writing at the School for Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto. She won a National Magazine Award Silver in 2012 for her profile of Métis activist Chelsea Vowel. She is currently at work on a coming-of-age novel about a young classical pianist.
Susan Goldman is a master printer and founding director of Lily Press and the Printmaking Legacy Project, a non-profit dedicated to documentation and preservation of printmaking practice and history. For work on her film “Midwest Matrix,” a groundbreaking documentary on the fine art printmaking tradition of the American Midwest, she was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Through her collaboration with choreographer Keira Hart-Mendoza and the dance company UpRooted Dance, Susan transforms two-dimensional prints into fully animated, three-dimensional, large-scale sculptural forms moving through time and space. She has taught at the Corcoran School of Arts and Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, Georgetown University and George Mason University.
