WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bob Good (VA-05) sent a letter to the Department of Justice signed by 29 of his colleagues demanding an investigation into individuals using artificial intelligence (AI) to exploit children by generating child sexual abuse materials (CSAM).

Several media reports dating back to 2019 have highlighted the alarming ease with which certain AI applications can create explicit materials. By simply uploading a genuine picture of an individual, AI is able to generate CSAM within seconds. This year, the Washington Post reported on this problem, emphasizing that “Justice Department officials who combat child exploitation say such images still are illegal even if the child shown is AI-generated, but they could cite no case in which someone had been charged for creating one.”

“The primary responsibility of the government is to protect its citizens,” said Rep. Good. “In our technology-driven world, we must increase efforts to protect America’s children online, especially with the rise of Artificial Intelligence. Protecting children from exploitation is a bipartisan concern that transcends political agendas. I am committed to ensuring the safety of children and holding accountable those who commit such reprehensible actions.”

“In today’s world, children are tragically being exploited through the circulation of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated materials that depict child sexual abuse. Family Policy Alliance is grateful that members of Congress are speaking up on behalf of these children,” said Ruth Ward, Director of Government Affairs at Family Policy Alliance. “AI is a new field for potential child exploitation, and law enforcement must respond quickly when children are taken advantage of by criminals—at times unsuspectingly by themselves or their parents. Parents and their children deserve to be protected from this disgusting use of technology, and we applaud Congressman Bob Good and members of Congress for speaking up by ensuring the Department of Justice immediately intervenes in these cases.”
