The 18th-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team collected its second-straight shutout Sunday afternoon in the Hornets’ 5-0 win over Earlham on Centre College’s South Turf.
Franka Weronek scored twice for Lynchburg, while Brittany Claybaugh, Madison Adcock, and Emily Yanes each added single goals. The Hornet defense allowed just one shot in the game.
Lynchburg owned the contest from the outset, sustaining pressure on the Earlham goal until the 10th minute, when a penalty corner set up the Hornets’ go-ahead. Claybaugh inserted the corner to the apex of the arc, where it was played left to Aaryn Boatwright. Lynchburg’s all-region defender uncorked a powerful shot toward the left post that Claybaugh deflected into the goal for an early lead.
The Hornets doubled their lead in the second period, when Martha Chiappazzi beat the defense to the right end line and crossed the ball in front of the goal, where Weronek waited to hack it into the cage. Lynchburg took its 2-0 lead into the half.
Lynchburg waited just 30 seconds to get on the board after halftime, when Adcock caged an unassisted goal for the Hornets’ third. The fourth didn’t wait long after when Lynchburg earned a penalty stroke that Weronek finished to cinch her first-career two-goal game. Yanes added the Hornets’ fifth and final goal in the 46th minute.
The Hornets (8-1) will set their sights on Old Dominion Athletic Conference play this week, heading to Randolph-Macon Friday for both teams’ 7 p.m. ODAC opener.
