Liberty University’s women’s tennis team ended its season on May 2 with a 4-0 defeat against Washington in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship. The match took place at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The result brings Liberty’s record to 16 wins and 10 losses for the season. The loss concludes what was described as a historic year for the Lady Flames, who recently claimed their first-ever Conference USA Championship and will return their full roster next season.

During Saturday’s match, Daniella O’Neill led Liberty with a strong showing at No. 1 singles, winning her first set against Reece Carter before play was halted. However, Washington secured an early advantage by taking the doubles point after victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. In singles play, Marie Weissheim defeated Celina Joseph at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-3), Jermine Sherif won over Milana Tsulygina at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-2), and Karolina Kozakova clinched the overall victory by beating Candy Wai at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-1). Three matches were left unfinished once Washington had secured enough points for victory.

Washington is ranked number twenty-two by ITA and advances to face regional host Virginia in the second round of tournament play on Sunday afternoon.

Looking ahead, Liberty will retain all players from this year’s squad for next season since no athletes are graduating.
