Liberty University will host No. 10 Virginia Tech in a softball game at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for Wednesday, April 15 at 6 p.m., according to an announcement made on April 14.
The upcoming game is significant as Liberty seeks to improve its record against nationally ranked opponents and solidify its position in the Conference USA standings. The Lady Flames currently hold second place in the conference with a record of 13-5 after winning two out of three games against Western Kentucky University over the past weekend.
During their recent series, Liberty secured a narrow victory in the opening game against WKU, highlighted by two runs batted in from Dani Lee. Pitchers Danner Allen, Abigail Findlay, and Gabby Mike combined for a six-hit shutout during game two of the series. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech enters Wednesday’s contest following a successful weekend where they won two out of three games against No. 21 Virginia. Emma Mazzarone and Bre Carrico led the Hokies to a four-hit shutout with eleven strikeouts during Sunday’s finale.
Virginia Tech holds third place in Atlantic Coast Conference standings with an 11-4 conference mark and is recognized nationally for their offensive performance this season. The Hokies are ranked seventh nationwide in batting average (.364), ninth in home runs (73), eleventh in runs per game (8.18), fourteenth in earned run average (2.58), and eighth for strikeouts per seven innings (8.18). Last season, Virginia Tech won both meetings between these teams and has an eight-game winning streak over Liberty dating back several years.
Liberty is seeking its first win this season over a top-25 opponent after going winless through eight attempts so far; historically from 2018 through last year they have averaged three wins per season against ranked teams. Key players for Liberty include Alexia Carrasquillo who leads her team with nine home runs and thirty-two RBIs while Ella Fox leads with twenty-nine runs scored and eight stolen bases.
Looking ahead, both teams will aim to build momentum as they approach the final stretch of their respective conference schedules.
