Liberty University announced on May 4 that its softball team will begin its quest for a third consecutive Conference USA (CUSA) championship on Wednesday at Delaware Softball Diamond in Newark, Delaware. The Lady Flames, who are the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will play against the winner of an earlier game between Florida International University and Louisiana Tech.
The event is significant as Liberty aims to become the first CUSA softball team since DePaul from 2002 to 2005 to win three straight conference tournament titles. The Lady Flames have previously won seven conference tournament championships across different leagues, including three in the Big South, two in the Atlantic Sun Conference, and two in CUSA.
Last season, Liberty made history by advancing to its first-ever Super Regional and became the first team since 2005 to eliminate a national No. 1 seed from its regional bracket by defeating Texas A&M twice at the NCAA Bryan-College Station Regional. The program has also made five consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and secured an at-large berth in 2023.
The team’s recent performance includes tying a program record for runs scored during a regular-season sweep against Kennesaw State, outscoring their opponent by a combined score of 32-5 over three games. Freshman Abigail Findlay pitched a one-hit shutout during this series.
Statistically, Alexia Carrasquillo leads Liberty with a .339 batting average along with eleven home runs and forty-four runs batted in (RBI). Dani Lee holds a .373 average with four home runs while Ella Fox leads in runs scored and stolen bases. Pitcher Camden Anders has recorded twelve wins this season with nine victories coming during conference play.
This week’s opening game marks Liberty’s first appearance playing softball in Delaware—the home state of current player Kaylan Yoder—and follows last year’s championship run that took place while playing for the first time ever in New Mexico.
