Liberty University announced on May 18 that Nathan Pitts will join the men’s tennis team for the 2026-27 season. Pitts transfers from Clemson University and will enter Liberty as a junior, having recorded a 14-13 singles record over two seasons with the Tigers.
The addition of Pitts is part of ongoing efforts by Head Coach Derek Schwandt to strengthen the team’s lineup. “The coaches are honored to welcome Nate to our Flames family. He is going to elevate our team culture, training environment and grit as a unit,” Schwandt said. “He is a tough competitor and has improved a lot through consistently being consistent. He will continue to do so at Liberty as we train champions for Christ.”
Pitts becomes the third new member of Liberty’s upcoming roster, joining Angel Veliz and Owen Guistwite, who are set to arrive as freshmen in the fall. During his freshman year at Clemson in 2024-25, Pitts achieved a notable fall season with a 9-5 record that included six consecutive wins and claimed his draw at the Division I Southern Intercollegiates tournament with an undefeated run.
In his sophomore year, he posted a 4-6 tournament record and made his spring debut for Clemson with one win in three matches. His doubles play resulted in a career mark of seven wins against six losses.
Pitts currently holds ratings of 12.50 on Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) and 13.46 on World Tennis Number (WTN). He has registered victories over opponents such as Boris Kozlov (career-high ATP ranking No. 493) and Manuel Plunger (career-high ATP ranking No. 858).
Liberty continues its efforts to build upon recent seasons after finishing as Conference USA runners-up for three consecutive years.
