The Liberty Flames men’s basketball program announced on April 28 the addition of guard Matthew Shelton for the 2026-27 campaign.
Shelton, a 6-foot-5 guard from Hillsboro, Virginia, will transfer to Liberty from the University of Charleston, where he played for two seasons. Head coach Ritchie McKay said, “He’s from a really good collegiate program. Matt’s a great athlete who has really good range. His quiet disposition and total investment in the team and its success is really going to help our room.”
During his sophomore year at Charleston, Shelton started all 27 games he played in and averaged 12.4 points per game along with 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists per contest. He shot over fifty-two percent from the field and thirty-four percent from three-point range. The Golden Eagles finished their season with a record of nineteen wins and ten losses, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
As a freshman in the previous season, Shelton appeared in all twenty-eight games with twenty-four starts while averaging ten-and-a-half points per game and four-and-a-half rebounds per game.
Shelton becomes Liberty’s sixth commitment through this year’s transfer portal alongside Cobi Campbell, Cooper Campbell (Troy), Dillon Claussen (Washburn), Sean Register Jr. (Eastern Florida State), and Osmar Garcia-Araujo (Anderson).
