Liberty University’s men’s golf team completed the first round of The Hayt tournament at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Saturday. Freshman Silas Haarer led the Flames with a score of 1-under-par 71 after recovering from three early bogeys on the back nine. Haarer made birdies on holes 17, 18, 1, and 8 to finish under par for the day.
The rest of Liberty’s starting lineup each carded three birdies. As a team, Liberty recorded 16 birdies during the opening round and is currently tied for 13th place with Duke after posting a team score of 291 (+1).
The Hayt features a competitive field of 16 teams, including eight ranked in the top 25 according to Scoreboard Powered by Clippd national rankings. LSU holds the lead at 14-under-par (274), two shots ahead of Virginia at 12-under-par (276). Auburn and Charlotte are five shots behind LSU after both shot a first-round score of 279 (-9).
Liberty’s individual scores were: Silas Haarer (T26, -1), Michael Lugiano (T50, +1), Ike Joy (T50, +1), Evan Barbin (T66, +2), and Josh Ryan (T73, +3). The second round will begin Sunday at Sawgrass Country Club with Liberty starting from hole No. 10 at 8:48 a.m.
