Congressman John McGuire, who represents Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District, has recently used his social media platform to highlight local businesses, recognize military spouses, and report on constituent services.
On May 7, 2026, McGuire posted about supporting small businesses in his district: “Whenever I pass through Appomattox, I make a point to stop downtown at Granny Bee’s. This local restaurant is a staple in the community, known for great food and friendly staff. Small Business Week is a great reminder to support local, not just this week, but throughout the year.”
The following day, May 8, he acknowledged the contributions of military spouses: “On Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we recognize the incredible men and women who stand beside our service members through every challenge and sacrifice. From long deployments to keeping families strong at home, their dedication and resilience are an essential part of our”
Later on May 8, McGuire detailed efforts by his office to assist constituents in recovering funds from the federal government: “My team and I have helped folks from Campbell, Lynchburg, Albemarle, South Hill, and more get money back that they were owed by the federal government. We have been able to recover over $8 million for people of the Fifth District, and we would love to help you too.”
McGuire’s focus on small business aligns with national initiatives such as Small Business Week—a period designated annually in the United States to celebrate local entrepreneurs and encourage community support for independent businesses. His recognition of military spouses coincides with Military Spouse Appreciation Day, observed each year on the Friday before Mother’s Day to honor those who support service members during deployments and other challenges.
