Congressman John McGuire, who represents Virginia’s Fifth District in the U.S. House of Representatives, has posted a series of statements on his official X account regarding the ongoing government shutdown. McGuire attributes the shutdown to Democrats and highlights its impact on military families, government services, and national security.

On October 7, 2025, McGuire wrote, “Due to the Democrat shutdown, many servicemembers may go without a paycheck soon. This will cause significant harms for our warfighters and their families who live paycheck to paycheck and often struggle to make ends meet. It is time to reopen the government and support our”.

The following day, he reassured constituents that his office remains operational despite the shutdown. On October 8, 2025, he posted, “During the Democrat shutdown, our office is still working hard for the people of Virginia’s Fifth District. If you have an issue with a federal agency, have questions about services, need help, or would like to share your concerns, please reach out to my office.”

Later the same day, McGuire addressed national security concerns linked to the government shutdown. He stated on October 8, 2025: “Everyday Democrats keep this shutdown going is another day our adversaries use to catch up to us and weakens our national security.”

Government shutdowns in the United States occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills funding federal agencies. During these periods, many federal employees are furloughed or work without pay, including members of the military. Congressional offices often continue to provide constituent services even when other federal operations are halted.
