The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office announced on May 7 that it will hold its annual Wreath Laying Ceremony on Thursday, May 14, at 10:00 a.m. The event will take place at the Memorial Garden in front of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.

The ceremony is part of National Law Enforcement Memorial Week and honors Deputy Jason Saunders and all fallen law enforcement officers. The observance provides an opportunity for reflection and gratitude for those who have lost their lives while serving their communities.

Deputy Jason Saunders was killed in the line of duty on April 3, 2007, while serving Campbell County. The agenda for the ceremony includes an Honor Guard Posting of the Colors, opening remarks from the sheriff, a moment of silence and prayer, introduction of guest speaker Mike Milnor—Director of Excellence in Criminal Justice and Associate Professor of Government at Liberty University—placement of the wreath, closing remarks by the sheriff, and retirement of the colors by the Honor Guard.

Citizens are invited to attend alongside Sheriff’s Office personnel, county employees, family members, and Deputy Saunders’ parents Dale and Peggy Saunders. “The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office invites the community to join in honoring the memory of Deputy Saunders and all law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” according to officials.

Campbell County is also home to one public school district that enrolled 7,896 students during the 2023-24 school year; Brookville High School had the highest enrollment among local schools with over one thousand students; white students made up about two-thirds (67.1%) while Black students accounted for seventeen percent (17%) according to Virginia Department of Education.
