The Appomattox Health & Rehabilitation Center received an overall rating of 1 out of 5 for the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported. This is below the 3.0 statewide average for Virginia nursing homes.
The facility offered 60 beds during this quarter, which is 53 fewer beds than the state’s average. It provided care to an average of 53 residents in that same period.
By the end of the first quarter of 2026, Appomattox Health & Rehabilitation Center had incurred two fines totaling $18,636 and faced two penalties.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the nation’s population of older adults is rising while younger groups decline. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans ages 65 and up grew by 13%, while those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The older U.S. population has expanded significantly across the past century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
Research published in 2021 found nearly half of adults 65 and older—about 28 million—may at some point need long-term services and supports, with projections showing more than one-third could require care in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, who serves as executive director for the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
